    Problems with strep throat..

Well... two things really.. first my problem.. then i'll rant..

Starting about.. august 1st, i got strep throat.. the works too.. the shortness of breath, the fever of 101, the very painful throat etc. etc. So Knowing there was something wrong cause it started as just swollen throat one day.. then the works the next, but it was too late.. i went to the walk in clinic the next day and they did a throat swab.. and it came back positive for strep throat.. okay no probloem i guess i can deal with this.. (i had be doing really really well before this.. i started walking and riding my bike got my fev 1 up from 40% up to 55% the highest it's been since i was 16 so 6 years. and i got my weight up and everything).. they gave me two week of amoxicillin. Well the problem started with first i could eat nothing but a liquid diet becuase it hurt so much.. and second.. amoxicillin is really annoying to take with it's no eating one hour before and two hours after.. but you have to take it three times a week.. well by the end of the first day of taking it i felt a lot better.. i eventually got to eat solid foods a few days later... but with the stupid eating schedual i lost about 10 pounds.. no big deal.. i'll be fine again and i'll gain the weight back.. well 3 days after i was dont the antibiotic my throat hurt and my gland was swelled agian.. i started with tylenol right away to make sure i didn't get a fever and i went back to the clinic i originally went to.. to find out they were closed for the day.. well i had already called in sick to work twice and i couldn't afford to call in again. and i didn't want to go to another clinic where they didn't know me, so i settled with the place that knows me best and i called the cf clinic i told them my sore throat was back with increased shortness of breath and now my sinus' feel congested and i have ear achs... so the on call repirologist talked to my doctor who in turn called in a perscriptoin for cipro (i live in kitchener they're in toronto ... about an hour away.. if the traffic is good.. which it usually isn't) so i take the cipro but this time.. it takes longer for my throat to feel better.. but the congestion in my lungs is starting to go away.. my gland unswells a little bit.. but i still feel crappy, tired and my throat hurts in the morning and everything.. but i put it off cause i knew i was going to see the doctor today.. well i go there and all my numbers are down.. i originally lost 15 pounds.. i gained 5 back .. so i lost 10 pounds.. so they ask me about that.. and i tell them.. i had strep throat.. blah blah blah.. so okay.. so i do my pft's.. fev1 down to 38.. so they ask me.. they were so focused on my lungs i had to keep reminding them about the strep throat.. then they come right out and tell me that the cipro wasn't for my strep throat.. that was for my lungs.. so i've wasted 2 weeks clearing up something that happened because of the strep throat.. but don't get rid of the strep throat.. eventually i convienced them to give me more amoxicillin for my throat because it's still bothersome and asked them about something else i can take instead of the amoxicillin so i can actually eat. but they stuck with the amoxo... and i was wondering if anyone else had this type of problem and what they did with it.. is it common for people with cf to have problems with strep? i've never had it before in my life.. and i know it's a bad bacteria that can easily become resistant to antibiotics.

My rant is basically.. i'm sick of going to general practioners that know nothing of cf and going to cf doctors who know nothing of anything else.. like we have a whole team to look after your nutrition, your lungs, and your stomach.. but no one for the inbetween. i think that clinics should affiliate themselves with other specialists so when they send us to urologists, or (i can't remember the name..).. bone doctors, or things like that they will know.. and they can rule out.. this is more common with people with cf.. or no this is just your body being special. I just felt today that whenever i mentioned to the doctors about strep throat they would stare at me like they had no idea.. or they were trying to think back to years ago in medical school or something.. i felt like they were too busy focused on the lungs that they forgot about anything else.. like didn't they think that maybe if they had cleared up the strep throat my lungs wouldn't have been so bad for so long.. that maybe 5 weeks later i still wouldn't feel like crap.. my body can only deal with so many infections at once.. i feel like i went in with a broken arm and i was tell them.. well i'm in pain.. and i'm throwing up and i have some infections and it's hard to see.. and whatever.. and they treated everything and i'm left going.. but.. i still have a broken arm.. those things are just going to come back because you didn't go to the root of the problem... i dunno it's just frusterating..

    Problems with strep throat..

You need to push for a stonger antibiotic. I don't want to scare you but if strepp goes on too long it can cause some serious health problems, kidney failure for one thing.

I totally understand your frustration at GP's who don't know much about CF, but on the other hand it is not what they do. You need to take the resposibility to say "Hey, my immune system is not normal due to my CF, you need to treat me as such." You can also find an internist who specializes in resperatory care. They can take care of anything a GP can and will have a much better understanding of CF as well. I go to one and she's great! Her and my CF docs communicate very well, so they have all the same information in both of my charts. She also understands the infections need to be treated aggressively. When I had strepp I was on zythro for 10 days when the normal course is 5. I was on high dose cipro for two weeks for a kidney infection, she said normally she would have perscribed a lower dose for half the time.

Don't fault the GP too much for not knowing as much as you do about CF.

What's going on with your sore throat may be more than just the strep. It could be a sinus infection too, so it's likely that you have multiple things going on. Talk with the doctor again and make sure that they're looking for more things than just strep, and that they are treating it with more than just oral antibiotics. The weight loss in particular seems indicative of a bigger problem.

I'm not a medical professional, just a seasoned pro with understanding my own health and how to get things done.
