Thread: Riding Horses

RE:Riding Horses

I don't remember how long it took me to get results, but I remember how my mom talked about her riding lessons.(she doesn't have cf) but took hour long lessons once a week and saw improvements (once she wasn't so sore! the first couple times you're legs/arms can be sore for a couple days, just like lifting weights if you haven't for a while) after two or three weeks of riding once a week. She uses an albuterol inhaler sometimes and noticed she didn't have to as much and she felt better in general than she had. She could tell her lung capacity increased as well.
I actually am not sure of any barns in Nevada, or of the geography of the cities in california that are near you. Here's a link to a website with American Saddlebred barns in the US. ( http://www.saddleandbridle.com/issues/june05/June%2005%20HOC.pdf ) California has many, especially in SoCal. If there aren't any saddlebred barns near you, you might try your local listings for something in your town/area to start out with. Tell them you want to ride English(saddle seat more than hunt seat, hunt seat you lean forward too much, where as saddle seat you focus on sitting up very straight with GREAT posture, one of the most helpful aspects during the workout because your lungs can get more air).
Hope this helps!

RE:Riding Horses

Hi Justine!
Thanks for your post. My daughter who is 13 has CF. She has very good lung function-in fact she's always at 100% or better (unless she has an exacerbation). We truly believe that the fact she rides horses and plays basketball on a regular basis is why she is so healthy. We bought our little boarding facility 4 years ago. Danielle is expected to help with night chores, clean stalls and exercise and train her horse on a regular basis. I think being outside in the fresh air helps too! You can view some of her pictures on our website our website She is going to be very excited about what you posted-it's nice to see some of our personal theories might be right!
