    School rampant with strep throat

There isa rumor that strep "lives" in my daughter's school. My daughter has had strep throat for the 5th time this school year. She does not have CF, but she is in constant close proximity with her brother who is 2 years old who does have CF. Sam has not contracted it, yet, but I think that is due to the steady amount of antibiotics he is already on. I asked the school nurse if they were doing everything they could to keep kids out, and definitely got the brush off. There are procedures in place, but they are satisfied they are good enough. I am not satisfied. I see many kids at school with fevers. How much cleaning do they do?I plan to talk to the administration about it, but I want to educate myself. How can a school minimize the spread of strep throat? I need a checklist.

I would check with the School Bus company to see how often that they sterilize the buses. Perhaps they could begin a program so only healthy kids ride the bus.

Has it been ruled out that your daughter is not a carrier for strep?

If they could keep the kids out of school, your problem would be solved.

    Julissa,

Strep throat is transferred by saliva. So, the way kids can get each other sick with it is by sharing food, drink, or coughing on each other when the child has strep throat and is not on antibitiotics and has a fever.
Have you spoken with your child's pediatrician about your daughter and why she keeps getting strep throat? I ,as a child , would often get strep throat. My son without CF seems to get it perhaps once a year, lately less often.
My daughter with CF, has not had strep throat even when my son has. Once, when she was a baby, I got strep throat, we were so physically close(I was nursing her) which likely helped her immunity but she still didn't get strep. Her pediatrician even swabbed her for strep to make sure she didn't have it, even though she had no symptoms(he is very cautious).
Anyway, about the school, some kids just go to school when they are sick. Parents dose their kids with tylenol and send them to school. teach your daughter not to share drinks/food. I am not sure what else you can do.
