I just finished three weeks of IV antibiotics last week and Friday night..I was doing a Pulmozyme treatment and I coughed up about two table spoons of blood bright red..no sputum..so I freaked out (inside) ofcourse. The problem is that my doctor is 3 and a half hours away. So I just sat very still for the next 4 hours and eventually it slowed down and just became streaks...any advice?

I can offer you some advice since i have been thru a lot of problems with hemoptysis ( coughing up blood). The best thing you can possibly do is, try to remain calm. You dont want to raise your blood pressure when you are having a bleed. Sit down and try to relax, a drink of cold water wouldnt hurt, in fact it may even help a bit. Did you call your doctor? You may want to when you have a bleed. 2 table spoons isnt a whole lot so try not to be too scared about it, But you also dont want to ignore it. Your doctor may prescribe "mephyton" (vitamin K) which helps to clot the blood faster. A lot of my episodes with hemoptysis have happened while laying down flat and i have read it seems to be a common thing with other cf patients who bleed, so you may want to avoid laying flat for at least a few hours . If you should have a larger bleed ,you should definitely call your doctor. YOu can email me if you need to [email protected]

If you continue to cough up blood, ask your Dr if you could discontinue the Pulmozyme for a few days/week & see if the blood stops. I never coughed up blood until I was a few weeks/months (I can't remember which) into Pulmozyme. Please understand that this may just be me that responds to Pulmozyme this way, but I just wanted to mention this and if you continue to cough up blood in the next few days to a week, try (with Dr's approval) to lay off the Pulmozyme & see if the blood stops. Good luck. I hope it stops for you, I know it can be scary, especially the first few times it happens.

like diane i have had many episodes of hemoptysos in the past, and i too am effected by things such as lying flat on my back, lifting heavy things, exercise which increased heart rate, pulmozyme, tobi, and some times just leaning back in a chair . the amount you had wasnt anything to stress to greatly about, but i would contact your doctor about it and go in so he can get some blood and check your white count and hemoglobin as well as your vit k level, hopefully you can just grab some antibiotics if your infection is up, or iron if your enimic (dont know how to spell it), or you might need vit k to help with the clotting time...good luck
