Hi,

After a recent run of IV's I've added Activia Yogurt and Acidophilus pill supplements. I've been eating one yogurt at dinner and taking one Acidophilus pill each morning for about a week and a half. It seems to be helping some with gas and other undesirable IV side affects. I'm now back to my old fashioned maintenance of Septra DS and Ceclor daily. A basic Google search say use acidophilus for about a week. So, considering I've been using oral antibiotics daily forever, how long should I maintain the Probiotics regimen? - Thanks!

My daughter takes a pretty high does probiotic every day. The few times I have run out and she has not taken it for a couple of days she has more digestive issues.

Hi Steve
I'm not familiar with Septra DS and Ceclor (I'm from the UK). What bugs are they used to treat? Pseudemonas?or something more unusual?
Always interested when I hear about different antibiotics!
Thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah, Septra is a generic, I think, for Bactrim DS, which is sulfamethoxazole/trimethopr. This is supposed to be mildly effective in treating pseudomonas. Cefaclor is a generic for Ceclor. This drug is supposed suppress staph and strep.

Steve the blend I have does not have acidophilus, it has 9 different strains of Lactobacillus and a few strains of bifidobacterium. There have been some great threads on here in the past on what strains of probiotics are best and which ones should be avoided.

Emily takes a multi-strain probiotic twice a day. At first we just used it around the time she was on abx but we eventually switched to daily use when we noticed that it made a difference in her stools.

I have been using Acidophilus for years now, best thing I ever added I am on Bactrim 365 days a year, I take 2 pills every morning with my ABEKS and Bactrim, not sure how many units that is? but I must say a few times I've run out for a short time and feel the difference. I think it is a great idea to use them daily. Pat 55/CF

DD does Culturelle every morning. We don't stop it ever because of all the problems with C-diff. Culturelle contains Lactobacillus.

I take a dose of Culturel daily and twice daily when on oral antibiotics. On IV's in the hospital I take it three times a day. All on the reccommendation of the doc!

I am a lifelong yogurt eater and after I started getting sick I eat yogurt and a danactive like drink everyday. It helps keep away infections and digestive issues for me at least. The only time I don't eat probiotics is when I am on a oral antibiotic, since most of the anitbio would be spent on fighting the probio in the digestive tract. It works for me and I encourage you all to talk about this with your dr's! In other countries they actually prescribe probios instead of antibiotics(don't self medicate with it though talk to your dr.)

No, that is NOT true... you haven't been doing it wrong.

That one individual has found an approach that works well for him in managing his symptoms.

Taking probiotics while on antibiotics has been extensively studied. It is not harmful and is not going to cause the abx to 'fight' the probiotic and therefore not treat the real infection. An abx destroys the normal flora in our bodies because of their normal mechanism of action~ it's an unfortunate effect but that's just how the meds work. That is why the probiotic can help in restoring the balance of flora that is supposed to be there, and adding other beneficial strains that are good for intestinal health (and other aspects of our health; i.e. benefits to our immune system.) The abx isn't going to specifically target it at the expense if treating the infection is was originally prescribed to treat.

I would recommend you talk to your dr about the timing of your reflux med, though. Those can interact with many other medications and your meds may be more effective if not taken at the same time.

You should really talk to your dr or nutritionist and see what they tell you. I am no dr but I have been fighting infections for along time and I noticed when I would take a probio when on a antibio it would take longer for me to get better. So I stopped doing the probio when on a course of antibiotics and 3 hours after my last pill I start the probio regime back up and add extra to repopulate my digestive tract. You should probably at least wait a couple hours to eat the probio after taking your antibiotic, Just my opinion! Again I am no dr just personal experience here!

the key with probiotics and antibiotics is NOT to take them at the same time of day. We usually give them about 2-3 hours apart. The probiotics make an amazing difference in their poops and tummy aches, when the boys are on antibiotics.

You are right, Missa. It can make a difference what time we take them (so many meds need to be taken with or without food, with or without other medications...) I was mostly concerned about the whole idea of her feeling like she may have been 'doing it wrong' by taking the probiotics at all while on antibiotics, which of course is not the case. I also see a BIG difference in Emily's stools when she takes them, and less complaints of stomachaches. I see a difference all the time (the change becomes obvious within several days if we run out!), but especially while on abx.

Note> We are recommended to give probiotics to Emily by her clinic nutritionist, and her CF dr prescribed Culturelle for her while she was in the hospital this past summer on IV's and we were told to continue with the one we usually used once we were home.
