I caught a wicked nasty head cold that so far (knock on wood) is leaving my lungs in not too bad of shape. It has resulted in one of those horrid dry throat based coughs. Between CF meds and all the couging and such my throat is absolutely raw to the point of bleeding. I am 100% positive it is not my lungs adn its not 'bleeding' its just leaving pink tinges.

Any ideas to help the throat, I got this once before.

Thanks

gargling with warm salt water will relieve the pain and clean the site allowing it to heal faster.

I had a very dry throat problem today for other reasons. I have some sinus issues going on and I kind of over did the sinus rinse thing. Just kind of made the back of my throat dry and very irritated....blah. Almost the feeling of a sore throat only worse and I knew the rinse caused it. Anyway, I have learned that rinsing with regular mouthwash is not a great thing because of the alcohol and that to prevent thrush and other yucky things rinsing with one of those moisturizing mouthwashes is a good thing.....so......I rinsed with a moisturizing mouthwash that has no alcohol and my yucky and tender throat felt better within about 15 minutes. I think the name of the rinse was Biotene.....something like that. It was awesome. Let me tell you that my back of the throat was SUPER dry from overnight O2 and sinus rinses.

Thank you both for quick reply.

Skye-my grandma is religious with biotene I know exactly what you are talking about I will need to invest in a bottle. Thanks for teh idea. I also way overdid it with the rinses and I suck that back through my throat and spit it out so that is part of this too.

Lou Lou-I will give it a go, I can tell you the sinus rinses do not feel good on it but that was in a different spot so what the hey!

Tea is an astringent. Drinking it or gargling with it should help stop the bleeding. I also had good results with taking 600mg to 1000mg of calcium citrate to help stop nosebleeds. Calcium is necessary to start the cascade of chemical reactions which causes clotting. Roses are also an astringent but I would bet the odds are pretty low that you have rose flavored jelly on hand. :-)

Donny - I am sure, when I get just a little bleeding from my lungs it is in streaks and I can 'feel' I am having issues in my lungs. This is tinging whatever I spit out a faint pink whether I initiate the cough with my sinuss or the back of my throat or my lungs and even clear spit is pink. I do however have an appointment on thursday should this not clear up. The bummer in it all is I just got off orals two weeks ago as 'preventative' because I caught the flu but that wasn't nearly this bad.

thank you

Nicole,

I have had that dry cough before and I know how horrible it is. Virtually every sinus infection gives me that type of cough. I cough for hours and it is totally non-productive. I usually have a little blood too from all of the irritation.

I'll tell you what helps me....maybe it will help you too.

1) extra salty pretzels - When I munch on these, the tickle subsides. All of the salt breaks up the congestion. Weirdly, gargling salt doesn't do the same thing for me.

2) onions - Eat raw onion pieces throughout the day. They always make me productive when my cough is dry. I store chopped onions in the freezer and take out a few pieces here and there. They are easier to tolerate (for me) when they are cold/frozen.

3) boil some water in a cup, lean over it, throw a towel over your head, and inhale the steam. This also breaks up congestion.

4) haven't tried this, but have read alot about cayenne pepper stopping bleeding. I think you can dissolve it in water and take sips of it. You would need to google this one further.

5) This has worked for me at night before. Rub Vick's vapor rub on your FEET and put socks on. Weird, but when you're desperate, you'll try anything! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hope some of these help.

Becki-thank you. I actually had been doing vapor rub on my chest, forehead, and feet which does help my night cough. The past two nights have improved drastically and it wasnt needed, last night I didnt even wake up for a cough drop--hooray!

I just don't know if I could stomach the onions--eeww but I will keep it in mind for next time just incase. I found eating really salty popcorn worked so maybe this was the same thign as your pretzels.

NOw that the horrid cough is gone and I am back to being productive I have been taking mucinex to try and get all residual up and out so maybe I will try the onions.
