I am having my first port placed this Thursday- besides being extremely anxious and nervous, and all the nightmares...I am also now doubting the appearance of it. I want to cancel this appt. so badly, but I am thinking I will just suck it up and do it. I am a young woman, normal weight 5'6", 130 lbs...and I am wondering how much it is going to stick out of me. How do those girls who have it feel about the looks of their port? Any advice on placement, if I even have a say? I don't want it to look like I have a doorbell sticking out of my chest. I really only get IV's once a year, if that...but my PICCs are getting harder and harder to thread...to the point of not recieving IV ABX last time I needed them. Also, how badly are you bruised, scarred after the port placement? I am in a wedding on OCT 17th and now I am freeking out about the strapless dress!!!

I have a port and just got it almost 3 months ago. I love it and its not even noticeable at all! Its so awesome, my dr did such a great job. I am not as tall as you, I am only 5'3 and 105 lbs. The port is no bigger than a quarter. I got the Power injectable smart port CT. Its so tiny all you can see is the little scar. He also put the tube under my clavicle so it wouldnt be noticeable, that was my biggest worry. Although for about the first 2 weeks it was more noticeable because I was swollen and it was a foreign object. I also only do IVs once a year too but because of scarring in the veins it was getting harder to do PICCs. I really think you too will love your choice in getting a port. Hope all goes well!

Oh also, for me I had almost no bruise whatsoever, just swelling for a little while. The scar is about an inch long and at first was red and purple but now its a very light pink. I wore a strapless and the port site or scar wasnt even noticeable.

If you do a search on this site you will find pictures of some.

I am very anxious about having a "3rd nipple" which is what I consider it.

I have been reassured by many many woman that its not as bad as some of the pics &/or my head is envisioning.

I am very thin so anything will show, but they come in different sizes including pediatric.

The smaller the port the less visible, but also the less it can handle from my understanding (dont quote me on that)

I also have been told that communication with the surgeon is key. Most care how it all affects us socially, emotionally etc. BUT if you dont address it with them, ask ??? etc then you will never know for sure!

Good Luck!

I was very concerned about how much my port would stick out as well. I talked to my doctor in detail about my concerns and he and I were able to talk to the surgeon about my port placement. They were able to place my port in the side of my breast. I was very lucky that I had an understanding surgeon. I do know that alot of places will place a port lower in your chest, where your breast tissue can hide it better. The best advice I can give is to let your doctor and surgeon know your concerns and see if you can come up with a reasonable place for your port.

I just had my port put in July. If I stand naked and look in the mirror I can see it. When I put a bra on that pushes up my breast tissue you can only see the almost light pink scar about 1 1/2 inches. I have a slim port which they put in arms or in the chest of small people. I have worn tank tops several times this summer and my port is not noticable. The right Bra is important and having a little bit of a chest helps. It has become a lot less noticable in the past 2 months. I hope this helps.

I am 5'3 and at 115 you can't see it at all. When I was underweight (97lbs) you could really see it.

I had it put in in 2005 (17) and they put it lower towards my breast tissue and it really makes it hard to see. In fact noone knows I have anything unless I tell them.

They put a tiny pedi port in me.

I had one in my arm, which you could see, it was a bump sticking up.

I most recently had one in my chest and you could not see it at all (you could just see a faint scar). I am 5'5" and 130 so we are very close to the same size. I was very pleased with the placement of mine in my chest. And it wasn't noticable to my husband (I didn't want him to hate my chest b/c of a port).

I had no problems with the placement.

Maybe you could wear a wrap at the wedding if you are nervous about it showing.

I have mine on the side of my breast as well. You can't see it al all! All you can see is a little scar. When I first got it, I was so nervous as well and I was scared to go to the beach in my bikini since I was ALWAYS at the beach. My surgeon did amazing and you couldn't see it what so ever! GOOD LUCK! You will be just fine!

Haven't done this in a while, hope this posts normally. I just wanted to add that I loved my port, after thinking I would hate it. I, too, was having more trouble with PICCs, and the PICC placement was causing me more anxiety than I had realized (until it went away after I got the port). They placed it low on my breast and you couldn't see it even in tanks or strapless dresses. My only regret, although its up to you, was using the pediatric port. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I found that a lot of nurses had trouble hitting the "sweet spot" in the middle of the small port. In retrospect, the adult size wouldn't have shown much more, because of the low placement, and I probably wouldn't have ever had trouble accessing it. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Thanks ladies! Tomorrow is the big day- I am beyond terrified, but I have some xanax to take before hand, so that should help! I will talk to the surgeon before everything happens!

Good luck! Hope that it is placed in a place that you are comfortable with, both when it is accessed and deaccessed.

I have a chest port. My first one was easy to hid under a bra strap or tank top. My new one is more centered in my chest, next to the old port site that is scarred. The new one can be seen in a lot of my tops. My old and new port stick out like a third nipple. There is no hiding it with strapless. My scars alone are noticeable, let alone my raised port area.

I think as I have gotten older, I don't really care anymore who sees my port or not. People who are acquaintances (or who don't even know me) and ask me, I brush it off. Only a few people (outside of family and a couple friends) really know what my port is there for.

My new port is smaller and is a power port. I think this time around I can use a 1/2 inch needle to get it flush to the skin so it is less protruding when accessed.

Anyone else notice a change from the old ports to the new ports in terms of the length of needle needed?

I just wanted to thank all of you for your encouragement and kind words. I am now home and the port placement was a success. I am still in quite a bit of pain- nothing a little vicodin won't fix in a minute. Not as bad of a procedure that I had thought it would be. I am sure it will all be well worth it!

I'm skinny and my port sticks out, but the benefits so outweigh this. My veins were useless and now having treatment is so stress free and i can get blood taken from it which was always a nightmare for me. I wear stappy tops all the time on nights out and hardly anyone has ever asked me what it was so whether they don't notice it as much as i thought they would? Anyone who does ask i explain what it is and the sympathy vote may get me a free drink if i'm lucky LOL!! So i would say it was a good move getting mine fitted.

just thought i would mention a coupla things that i reckon are important. i had my port on the right side off my chest just above my booby. i wanted it that side because my wife slept on my left and often rested her head on the left side of my chest when dozing and cuddling. i have no port now but it would be better around the side kinda below my arm maybe next time. the reason is when we made love and pressed together my port was very noticably felt by us both and it was always always a painful reminder.
off topic i have student doctors, nurses and physio's often see me in hospital. twice i convinced two young student nurses that the lump on my chest was an undescended testicle and even let them feel the "tube" that drained the sperm to where it should go. true story.
cheers ladies, Blacky

Hi ,

I am on my 3rd port, 2 were/are for abx 1 was for dialysis .. Unfortunately the first 2 , not the ports themselves just my crummy body , had to come out

. My first port was a pediatric, no probs w/ that (cept for the dang clot, nothing to do w/ the port itself).. My current port is a double port, miedi port i think its called.

It really doesnt stick out much when not accessed.. i do have some scars & the line on this one is close to the surface because they couldnt find another vein Like i said my body is crummy ..

I absolutely love my port & hope & pray i get many good years out of it .. As i hope & pray yours does as well & that the surgery/healing process goes well.. Let us know ..

Take care, keep us posted & God Bless joni

I did get my port last Thursday, whew, I am glad that is over with. My incisions are healing nicely- get the stitches out on Friday. They had to place mine near the surface as well. I ended up with an almost 5 inch incision- vs the 2 inch they said it would be! That is how hard of a time they had getting it in So I hope and pray this one lasts long!!! It is about 3 inches above my right breast- over closer to the armpit...so it won't be noticeable in the types of clothes I wear. Thank you so much for all your kind words and advice. Without you...I would have probablly cancelled!
