Howdy...

I'm hopped up on prednisone and levaquin right now and another question popped into my head with regard to declines and rebounds in FEV1 levels with abx....

What is your experience, in general when you're put on abx.?

Do you fall way below baseline, go in for cleanout or get oral abx and then go back up to baseline? Do you shoot way above your baseline and stay there for a week or more?

I know we're all different, but was just curiou HOW different and what we all experience.

So, what is your "usual" experience? Just an average of your highs and lows and how long they last....

Just thought it would be interesting...

Thanks!

although on different meds to you last year my fev1 dropped from baseline down 18% to what it usually is.After 2 weeks ivs it came back up again minus 2% baseline. And from talking to other patients on the ward this is quite common

My boyfriend baseline is around 94-95. When he has an exacerbation it goes down to 89-90%. He takes oral antibiotics during two weeks(never on iv but he was diagnosed last year at 35). After orals he goes up to his base line 95%. After antibiotics he doesn´t cough at all, (only a little bit after chest therapy but he doesn´t bring up too much). The longest he stays without an exacerbation the highest his fev goes (last one 97%). He has been without an exacerbation since january now. Between flare ups he is asymptomatic with no cough. We know when he starts with an exacerbation because he starts coughing again. Usually he is on orals twice a year. Have you tried nac? He is on 1200mg per day and he says it seems to help. Before starting it (before diagosis) he used to have a persistent cough in the morning. Although we cannot tell if is just nac because after diagnosis he started with exercise and chest therapy too.

My numbers? Do they follow a similar pattern when you're sick and when you get "well"?

My baseline is about 86% and this time with an exacerbation my fev1 was 77%-79%. So when I began on iv therapy my fev1 went up just after two days of treatment to 82% and then plummeted way back down to 77% by the end of that week. I was so discouraged but I think it was because I went home to soon. I have a family at home to take care of and I always push myself. So it took a long time to get my fev1 back up to baseline; because iv's were started in April and just this Sept. my fev1 made it to 86%. And it varies how long people stay at their baselines. It's just weird this time how my fev1 got better, plummeted and slowly creeped back up to base.

My FEV1 had gone down 5% before IVs and then post-IVs, I had gained that back. FVC was slightly better.
I was hoping for a little extra on FEV1, but was happy that at least I was back at my baseline.
